A milk frothing jug is the pitcher you steam milk in and pour from, and the shape does most of the work. Sloped walls keep the milk rolling so it textures evenly, and the pointed spout gives you the control to cut a clean line through the crema. This one is 600 ml, in food-grade 304 stainless steel.

Why it matters

  • Sharp pouring spout: A tight, defined spout is what lets you draw hearts, tulips and rosettas rather than a white blob.
  • Silky microfoam: Tapered walls create the whirlpool that folds air into milk instead of blowing bubbles through it.
  • Food-grade 304 stainless: Will not rust, stain or hold flavours, and it conducts heat fast enough that you can judge milk temperature by touching the side.
  • 600 ml capacity: Two cappuccinos or one large latte, with the headroom milk needs to expand.
  • Balanced handle: Comfortable grip for the steady, controlled pour that latte art demands.

How to use it

  1. Fill with cold milk to just below the base of the spout.
  2. Purge the steam wand, then set the tip just under the surface, slightly off-centre.
  3. Open the steam fully. You want a gentle hiss as air is drawn in, not a screech.
  4. Once the milk has grown by about a third, submerge the tip to spin it into a whirlpool.
  5. Cut the steam at 60 to 65 C, wipe and purge the wand, then swirl and tap the jug before pouring.

Frequently asked questions

How full should I fill a 600 ml milk jug?

To the base of the spout and no higher, which is around 300 to 350 ml of milk. Milk expands by roughly a third as you texture it, so an overfull jug spills before it is properly aerated.

What size milk frothing jug should I buy?

Match the jug to your cup. 350 ml suits single cappuccinos, 600 ml handles two drinks or one large latte, and 1 litre is for high-volume use. Steaming a small amount of milk in an oversized jug is difficult, because the wand tip cannot reach the right depth.

How do I steam milk for latte art?

Stretch first, then texture. Keep the wand tip just under the surface until the milk expands by about a third, then submerge it to create a whirlpool and heat to 60 to 65 C. Swirl the jug before pouring so the foam and milk stay integrated.

Why is stainless steel best for a frothing pitcher?

It conducts heat quickly, so the side of the jug tells you the milk temperature without a thermometer. It is also non-reactive, will not absorb odours, and survives daily use and dishwashing.

Can I froth milk without an espresso machine?

Yes. Heat milk in the jug and use a handheld electric frother, or shake and microwave it. The texture will not match steam-wand microfoam, but it works well enough for a home cappuccino.
