An espresso puck screen is a fine stainless steel mesh disc you place on top of the tamped coffee before locking in the portafilter. It breaks up the jet of water coming from the shower screen and spreads it across the whole coffee bed, instead of letting it drill into one spot. This one is 58 mm across and 2 mm thick, built to handle full brew pressure.
Why it matters
- More even saturation: Water arrives across the full surface of the puck at once rather than as a concentrated stream in the middle.
- Less channeling: Shielding the top of the bed from a direct water jet reduces the cracks that ruin an otherwise well-prepared shot.
- A much cleaner machine: The screen catches grounds that would otherwise cake onto your shower screen. This is the benefit owners notice first and value most.
- Drier, cleaner pucks: Spent pucks tend to knock out in one piece with a screen in place.
- Reusable indefinitely: Rinse and reuse. No paper filters to restock, no consumables.
- High-pressure rated: Built to hold its shape under full espresso extraction pressure and temperature.

Frequently asked questions
What size puck screen do I need?
Match it to your portafilter basket, not your machine model. This screen is 58 mm, fitting the 58 mm baskets used by most prosumer and commercial-style machines. It should sit flat inside the basket with a small gap at the edge.
Does a 2 mm puck screen affect my dose?
It can. Two millimetres of screen takes up headroom in the basket, so if you already dose high the puck may touch the shower screen. If your shots suddenly choke after adding a screen, drop half a gram or grind a touch coarser.
Does a puck screen actually improve espresso?
It helps most with water distribution and machine cleanliness. The clearest and most consistent benefit is a cleaner shower screen and a slightly more even start to extraction. It is a refinement, not a fix for a bad grind, an uneven dose or a poor tamp.
Does a puck screen go on top of the coffee or underneath?
On top, after tamping. It sits between the coffee bed and the group head shower screen. Nothing goes underneath the coffee.
How do I clean a puck screen?
Rinse under hot running water after each session. Once a week, soak it in a coffee-safe detergent for 15 to 20 minutes to dissolve the oils that clog the mesh, then rinse thoroughly. A clogged screen restricts flow and works against you.
How long does a puck screen last?
Years, with regular cleaning. Replace it if the mesh deforms, tears, or stays clogged after soaking.
