A knock box is the bin you hit the portafilter against to dump the spent coffee puck. The padded bar across the middle takes the impact so your portafilter rim does not, and the enclosed body keeps wet grounds off your counter and out of your sink drain. This one is the large size, in ABS with a silicone knock bar.
Why it matters
- Protects your portafilter: A cushioned silicone bar absorbs the knock instead of denting the rim of an expensive portafilter.
- Quieter than a bin: Shock-absorbing ABS and silicone take the clang out of the morning routine, which matters if you pull shots before anyone else is awake.
- Keeps grounds out of the sink: Coffee grounds compact and block drains. A knock box collects several days' worth for the bin or the compost heap.
- Removable knock bar: Lift the bar out to empty and wash the box properly.
- Large capacity: Holds several days of pucks, so you are not emptying it after every third shot.
- Stable on the counter: Weighted base that stays put when you knock hard.

- Unlock the portafilter and tip it upside down over the box.
- Strike the rim once, firmly, against the padded bar. The puck should drop out whole.
- Wipe the basket with a cloth and rinse before the next shot.
- Empty the box every day or two and wash it with warm soapy water.
Frequently asked questions
What is a knock box used for?
For knocking the spent coffee puck out of your portafilter after pulling a shot. It gives you a padded surface to strike against and a container to collect the used grounds.
Can I just knock the puck into the bin?
You can, but you will chip or dent the portafilter rim against a hard bin edge, and wet grounds end up everywhere. Never knock into a sink: coffee grounds compact in the trap and block drains.
Where should I put my knock box?
Right beside the machine, on the same side as your dominant hand, so the portafilter travels the shortest distance from group head to box. A knock box across the counter means wet grounds get flicked over everything in between.
How many pucks does a large knock box hold?
The large size holds several days of pucks for a typical home setup pulling two to four shots a day. Capacity is rarely the limit though: empty it every day or two regardless, because wet coffee grounds start growing mould within a couple of days, especially in a humid climate.
What can I do with used coffee grounds?
Add them to compost, dig them into garden soil around acid-loving plants, or use them as a mild abrasive scrub for pots and pans.
