A French press is an immersion brewer: coarse coffee steeps in hot water for about four minutes, then a mesh plunger pushes the grounds to the bottom. Because there is no paper filter, the coffee oils stay in the cup, and that is what gives French press its heavy body and rounded, chocolatey flavour. This one pairs a glass brewing chamber with a protective outer shell, in 350 ml and 600 ml.

Why it matters

  • Full-bodied cup: The metal mesh lets oils and fine particles through, producing a richer texture than any paper-filtered method.
  • Coffee only touches glass: The brewing chamber is glass, which stays neutral and will not hold flavours from yesterday's coffee.
  • Protective outer shell: The surrounding body shields the glass from knocks and keeps the outside cool to handle.
  • Watch the brew: The clear chamber lets you see the bloom and judge when the coffee is ready.
  • Two sizes: 350 ml for one generous mug, 600 ml for two to three cups.
  • No power, no consumables: Coarse coffee and hot water is the entire requirement. Nothing to restock.

How to use it

  1. Grind coffee coarse, like sea salt. Use about 1 g of coffee per 15 ml of water.
  2. Add the grounds, then pour water just off the boil, around 93 to 96 C.
  3. Stir gently and fit the lid with the plunger raised.
  4. Wait four minutes.
  5. Press the plunger down slowly, then pour immediately so the coffee stops extracting.

Frequently asked questions

How much coffee do I use in a French press?

Use a 1:15 ratio by weight. For the 350 ml press that is about 23 g of coffee, and for the 600 ml press about 40 g. Start there and adjust to taste.

Which size French press should I buy?

The 350 ml makes one large mug and suits a single drinker. The 600 ml makes two to three cups. Bear in mind a French press works best when reasonably full, so if you usually brew one cup, the smaller size gives better results than half-filling a big one.

What grind size is best for a French press?

Coarse, roughly the texture of sea salt. Grinding too fine clogs the mesh, makes the plunger hard to press and leaves silt in your cup.

How long should coffee steep in a French press?

Four minutes is standard. Longer gives a stronger, more bitter cup; shorter gives a lighter one. Always pour the coffee out straight after plunging, because coffee left sitting on the grounds keeps extracting and turns harsh.

Is French press coffee stronger than drip coffee?

It tastes stronger because the oils and fine particles that paper filters trap end up in the cup. Actual caffeine content depends on your coffee-to-water ratio, not the brew method.

How do I clean a French press?

Scoop the wet grounds into a bin rather than the sink, then rinse the chamber. Every week or two, unscrew the plunger assembly and wash the mesh discs. Trapped coffee oils are the main cause of a stale, rancid taste that no amount of fresh beans will fix.
