A coffee bean spray bottle exists for one job: the Ross Droplet Technique, or RDT. One fine mist of water on your beans before grinding dissipates the static charge that grinding creates, so grounds fall cleanly into the portafilter instead of clinging to the chute, the counter and your hands. This one holds 10 ml, which is weeks of use.
Why it matters
- No more static cling: One spritz stops grounds jumping out of the basket and sticking to every surface nearby.
- Less grinder retention: Fewer grounds stuck inside the burr chamber means the dose that goes in is the dose that comes out.
- A clean counter: The mess RDT prevents is the reason almost nobody who tries it goes back.
- Fine, even mist: A tight spray pattern that dampens beans without soaking them.
- 10 ml, counter-sized: Small enough to live next to the grinder and travel in a bag.

Frequently asked questions
What is the Ross Droplet Technique?
RDT is spraying a very small amount of water onto whole coffee beans just before grinding. The moisture neutralises the static charge grinding generates, which stops ground coffee clumping, flying about and sticking inside the grinder.
How much water do I spray on coffee beans?
One spritz is enough for a single 18 g dose. The beans should feel very slightly damp, not visibly wet. Too much water causes grounds to clump inside the burrs and, over time, can corrode steel components.
Will RDT damage my grinder?
Not at the quantities involved, which amount to a fraction of a gram of water. The risk comes from overdoing it. Spray lightly, grind immediately, and clean your burrs on the normal schedule.
Can I use RDT with an electric grinder?
Yes, and that is usually where the benefit is largest, because motorised burrs generate more static than hand grinding. Same technique: one spritz, stir, grind.
How long does a 10 ml spray bottle last?
Weeks. A single spritz uses a tiny fraction of a millilitre, so 10 ml covers hundreds of doses. The reason to refill is freshness, not running out: change the water every few days so nothing grows in the bottle.
What should I put in a coffee spray bottle?
Plain drinking water. Do not use distilled water, which is less effective at conducting static away, and never alcohol or cleaning fluid. Refill with fresh water every few days so nothing grows in the bottle.
